Add a custom delimiter

  • Updated

Summary

Delimiters are characters used to indicate the end of a field, or to split up the values in a column.

MindBridge automatically detects common, single-character delimiters, such as:

  • Comma ( , )
  • Slash ( / )
  • Pipe ( | )
  • Semi-colon ( ; )

However, if your firm uses a unique delimiter (single- or multi-character), you can have MindBridge detect it by adding it as the new default delimiter.

Learn how MindBridge uses delimiters, and how to leverage a custom delimiter in your engagement.

Add a custom delimiter

There are a few ways you can apply a custom delimiter character to your analysis.

Method 1: Add default delimiter to a new library

App Admins can add a custom delimiter when creating a new library. Doing so applies the custom delimiter character(s) to any new engagement that uses the given library.

Within the Create library window, enter the desired delimiter character(s) into the Default delimiter field. Once the library is created, it can be selected for use in new engagements — these engagements will use the custom delimiter by default, but this can be overridden by your team while importing data into an analysis.

Method 2: Add or update default delimiter in an existing library

App Admins can override the delimiter applied to an existing library in the Library details.

  1. Within a given library, on the Library details tab, enter your desired custom delimiter in the Default delimiter field.
  2. When you are satisfied, select Save to apply your changes.

All engagements using the given library will be updated dynamically, but the applied delimiter can be overridden by your team while importing data into an analysis.

Method 3: Add or update delimiter when importing data into an analysis

When you import a file, the first step in the import process is Data Validation — this is where MindBridge detects the delimiter used in the file. You or your team can override the default delimiter on this step, but this change will only affect the file being imported.

Note: If a custom delimiter has not been set, MindBridge will default to displaying the detected delimiter from the file being imported (if one exists).

To update the default delimiter:

  1. Find the Delimiter field (located on the left side of the screen) and select Edit. A window will appear in which you will see the original data columns, a selection field, and a preview of the data columns using the selected delimiter.
  2. Use the selection field to choose a delimiter from the list, or enter your own custom delimiter then select Add item or press enter/return on your keyboard to apply it.
  3. When you are satisfied that the delimiter character is correct, select Confirm. MindBridge will begin revalidating the file and you will go back to the Data Validation step of the file import process.
