Summary

Learn how to split a column during column mapping.

Navigation

This task is performed during the data ingestion process, so you must navigate to an engagements Data page and begin importing a file.

Procedure

On the Column Mapping step of your import, click the ellipsis to the right of the column you want to split and select Split column.

The Split Column pop-up window will appear, and you will see two samples from the selected column and the option to split by delimiter or position.

Split by delimiter

Split by delimiter separates a text value into two or more columns dependent on a common character. For example, an Account ID column formatted as 11111.11.111 can be split into three columns using the period (.) character.

To split by delimiter, select Delimiter in the Split by menu, then select the delimiter type from the drop-down menu. If the desired delimiter is not in the drop-down menu, you can type it in and click on Add item.

The Data preview section will display every column that can be created, and provide the option to input a new name into the Column Header fields. You must use the Add checkbox to indicate which columns you want to create. When satisfied, Save your work.

Your new columns will be available on the Column Mapping step and are identifiable by the blue dot in the upper right corner of their name.

Split by position

Split by position allows you to highlight the data within a column that you’d like to split apart. This can be helpful for cases where there is no delimiter or if you would like to include the delimiter within your selection.

To split by position select Position in the Split by menu, then using your mouse or keyboard highlight the content you want to split in the Highlight to split field. If you want to split the column into several new columns, click Create new split and make another selection.
