Create a population from analysis results (MAC v.2)

  • Updated

Summary

Populations are a way you can slice and dice your analysis results in MindBridge. You can create populations based on various conditions to concentrate your analysis on particular areas or business processes that are of interest to you, as well as create specific populations to exclude entries you know are not risky, such as monthly accrual reversals, or entries that are tested separately, like equity transactions.

Once you have a population set up, you can use the Populations filter to find or exclude entries on the the Risk segmentation and Data table dashboards in General ledger analyses. This can help to provide deeper insights by reducing noise in your analysis results.

Learn how to create new analysis-level populations from the Data table dashboard.

Go to the Data table dashboard

  1. Select the logo in the MindBridge sidebar. You will go to the Organizations page.
  2. Select View in line with the desired organization, or click anywhere in the organization row. You will go to the Engagements page.
  3. Select View in line with the desired engagement, or click anywhere in the engagement row. You will go to the Data page.
  4. Select View Analysis in line with the desired analysis. You will go to the analysis results.
  5. Go to the Data table tab.

Tip: If you are already in an engagement, open the Analyze menu ( Analyze menu icon) in the MindBridge sidebar, select the analysis you want to see, then go to the Data table tab.

Create a population

You can create populations of entries in the analysis as needed. Any advanced filters* applied to the data table will appear as conditions within the new population — these conditions can be adjusted or removed as desired.

*Note: Populations cannot be created based on transactions. Be sure to select the entries view on the Data table dashboard before applying filters.

Step 1: Access the population builder

  1. Open the Actions menu near the top-right of the page.
  2. Select Create population. You will be brought to the population builder.

Step 2: Add a condition

Much like advanced filters, populations are comprised of conditions and rules. The population builder will provide one condition by default, but you can add as many conditions as desired.

Tip: Use the Base population field (located on the right side of the page, beneath the Population properties header) to apply rules and conditions from one of your existing populations (if any exist).
Note: If you have advanced filters applied to the dashboard, they will be present within the population builder. You can update these parameters as desired, or remove them by selecting the X icon to the right of each condition. Basic filters will not be applied to populations.
  1. Open the Filter by… menu to see the list of available facets for the condition, which are grouped conceptually. If you know which facet you want to use, you can search for it within the field.
  2. Select the facet you want to add. Additional menu options will appear based on your selection. Use these menus to build out the condition, then select Apply to add it.
  3. Optionally use the is menu to select whether the facet should be included (“is”) or excluded (“is not”) from the results.
Note: Conditions are configured to use "is" by default.
  4. Optionally, use the AND/OR toggle to select how conditions should be joined within the rule.
Note: Rules are joined by “AND” by default. If you switch to "OR", the rule will change colour to help you better understand these interactions.
  5. If your desired population only contains one condition, you can skip to step 4.

Step 3: Add additional conditions and determine rules around how they should interact

To add more conditions within the same rule

  1. Open the Add to rule menu (located at the top of each rule in the population, on the left side).
  2. Select Add condition. A new Filter by... menu will appear below the first condition.
  3. Repeat this process until all of your desired conditions have been added.

To add a new rule with more conditions

  1. Open the Add to rule menu (located at the top of each rule in the population, on the left side).
  2. Select Rule. A new nested rule will appear beneath the original rule, with a condition menu.
  3. Optionally, use the AND/OR toggle to select how conditions should be joined within this rule. If you switch to "OR", the rule will change colour to help you better understand these interactions.
  4. Open the Filter by... menu within the new rule, select the facet you want to add, then use the dynamic menus that appear to build out the condition.
Note: Populations can be comprised of a maximum of 5 levels of rules.
Tip: You can view the summary statistics to see the scope and impact of the given population as you continue to add rules and conditions.

Remove rules or conditions

To remove an individual condition, select the X icon to the right of the given condition.

To remove an entire rule (including all of its conditions), select the X icon to the right of the given AND/OR toggle.

Step 4: Define the population properties

This section is located on the right side of the page.

  1. Enter a unique population name.
  2. Use the category menu to select the population group you want to save this new population to, or enter your own then press enter/return on your keyboard to apply it.

Note: Categories allow you to organize your various populations. If categories have not yet been defined, enter a new category name now and press enter/return on your keyboard to save it.
  3. Enter a description of the population to help your team understand its purpose (maximum 250 characters).
  4. Use the checkboxes to select the save location(s) for the new population.
    • Library: If your user role permits, select this option to share the filter with the given library. Existing engagements using this library will not be affected, but any new engagements using this library will have access to this filter.
    • Organization: If your user role permits, select this option to share the filter with the given organization. Existing engagements within this organization will not be affected, but any new engagements created within this organization will have access to this filter.
    • Engagement: Select this option to share the population with the given engagement. Existing analyses within this engagement will not be affected, but any new analyses created within this engagement will have access to this population.
    • Analysis: Select this option to share the population to the given analysis. These populations will be accessible to anyone working within this analysis.

Step 5: Finalize the population

When you are satisfied, select Create population (located at the bottom-right corner of the page) to save the population to your desired location(s). The population will be added to the analysis and you will be brought back to the Data table dashboard.

Select Cancel anytime to discard the population and go back to the dashboard.

Once created, you can add populations to advanced filters, and use the basic page filters to include populations or exclude populations from the analysis results within the data table.

Note: Populations created within the analysis can be managed in the analysis settings.

Reset population

If you are not satisfied with the population created, select Reset population (located at the bottom-left side of the page) to remove all selected rules and conditions and begin again.

View summary statistics

Summary statistics give you high-level insight into the scope and impact of the given population.

When creating or editing a population, select Generate statistics (located to the right of the Summary statistics header) to see a visual summary of the population.

Totals

  • Total entries: The total number of entries within the population
  • Gross activity: The total value of the population
  • Total debit: The total debit value of the population
  • Total credit: The total credit value of the population

Risk percentage

  • Average MindBridge score: The MindBridge score averaged across the population
  • % of monetary value in high risk: The percentage of high risk monetary values in the population
  • % of monetary value in med. risk: The percentage of medium risk monetary values in the population
  • % of monetary value in low risk: The percentage of low risk monetary values in the population

Risk values

  • High risk entries: The number of high risk entries in the population
  • Monetary value in high risk: The total value of high risk entries in the population
  • Med. risk entries: The number of medium risk entries in the population
  • Monetary value in med. risk: The total value of medium risk entries in the population
  • Low risk entries: The number of low risk entries in the population
  • Monetary value in low risk: The total value of low risk entries in the population
Note: You can continue to add, remove, and update rules and conditions after generating the summary statistics. To see the impact of your changes, simply generate new summary statistics.

Use the summary statistics graph

This graph is generated based on the rules and conditions applied to the given population.

Change the time interval

By default, the graph displays the data in monthly intervals. To change this, open the menu (located above the graph on the right) and choose to view by Month, Week, or Day.

Change the time window

By default, the graph displays data from all dates within the current period. To narrow the scope of the graph, click and drag the time slider (located below the graph) to the desired range.
